While Meghan Markle is close with mother Doria Ragland, it’s no secret that her relationship with dad Thomas Markle is strained (to put it nicely). Since Meghan started dating Prince Harry, both Thomas and half-sister Samantha have done everything in their power to turn a personal profit from her newfound fame, going so far as staging paparazzi photos and bashing Meghan’s character in interviews and on social media. Most recently, Meghan’s estranged half-sister gave a TV interview defending their dad, in which she seemed to confirm reports that UK publishers plan to call Thomas to testify against the Duchess. Thomas appearing in court could make Meghan’s life a lot harder — here’s what we learned about his possible involvement.

On Friday, Samantha appeared on This Morning to address reports of Thomas getting involved with Meghan and Harry’s recent lawsuits against UK publications like The Sun, The Daily Mirror, and The Mail on Sunday. Asked whether Thomas would testify against Meghan, Samantha said “of course he would,” adding: “The truth is the truth. And so, based on that, of course he would testify.”

Harry and Meghan are suing The Mail on Sunday specifically for its publication of a private letter between the Duchess and her father, in which she implores her father to stop making statements to the press. On Tuesday, The Daily Mail reported that Thomas had turned over previously unseen text messages between himself and his daughter to the paper’s defense team, and that they had asked Thomas to appear as a key witness in their defense.

Samantha — of course — has a suggestion at the ready for how Thomas can help discredit Meghan’s case.

“This claim of breach of privacy doesn’t seem to have legitimate basis,” Meghan’s half-sister commented, claiming that Meghan herself had shared the letter in a “public forum.” While it’s unlikely that Samantha has real insight on the defense’s strategy here, court documents filed earlier this week do contain allegations that Meghan has repeatedly sought out media coverage of herself, which they could use to weaken her claim that she wanted this letter kept private.

When Meghan and Harry announced their lawsuit in October, the Duke of Sussex phrased their complaint like this: “The contents of a private letter were published unlawfully in an intentionally destructive manner to manipulate you, the reader, and further the divisive agenda of the media group in question…There comes a point when the only thing to do is to stand up to this behaviour, because it destroys people and destroys lives.”

A hearing date has not yet been set at this time.
