Meghan Markle Visiting This Animal Shelter Will Make Your Heart Melt

She and Prince Harry may have taken a step back from their role as senior royals, but Meghan Markle is still honoring her royal responsibilities. Case in point? The Duchess of Sussex recently visited an animal rescue group in the U.K., of which she was appointed a royal patron early last year. During her private visit, the animal lover discussed the group’s current progress and upcoming initiatives. Understandably, the visit also en-tailed (see what we did there?) cuddling with some of their furry residents.

Meghan and Harry took to Instagram on Wednesday to share news of Meghan’s recent visit to her royal patronage, London’s Mayhew. The couple shared two photos from Meghan’s trip: one showing her walking into the building with a member of the organization, and another of her placing a comforting hand on a German Shepherd being examined. “Earlier this month, The Duchess of Sussex popped in to see the amazing people at Mayhew to hear about the incredible progress made throughout the festive period,” the Sussex Royal post read. “The Duchess of Sussex, having been a proud patron of Mayhew since January 2019 and long understanding the connection between animal and community welfare applauds the people at Mayhew for the vital work that they do every day.”

As for the organization itself, they also devoted a post to the Duchess of Sussex’s visit. Sharing the same two photos of Meghan, they wrote that they were “delighted’ to see their patron come by. They went on to explain that, during her visit, they showed Meghan some of their recent accomplishments such as a set of brand-new kennels. They also identified the German Shephard in the photo with Meghan as Khan — a member of their Pet Refuge project, which provides care for pets of people in crisis.

Of course, Meghan has long been an advocate of animal welfare and a proponent of animal adoption. Her adopted beagle, Guy, has been a constant in her transition from American actress to royal to newly minted Canadian dweller. The senior pup even kept her company on her wedding morning while she sat to have her hair and makeup done.

She and Harry have since welcomed another dog into the family, a Labrador, and both canines have been spotted with the couple near their new Canadian digs. According to a local there by the name of Asymina Kantorowicz, she ran across the family (two-legged and four-legged) while on a New Year’s Day hike. “They had two dogs with them, and we wanted to pet one,” she told People.
