Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are inviting the public to their royal wedding

Kensington Palace has announced that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have extended an invitation to members of the public to attend their royal wedding in May. The nuptials will take place at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, roughly an hour from London, and is being billed as a “moment of fun and joy that will reflect the characters and values of the bride and groom.”

There’s a catch, of course. To be eligible, one must hail from the United Kingdom. Local schoolchildren have a bit of an edge, as 100 will be welcomed onto the Windsor Castle grounds to watch the arrival of the wedding party as well as the carriage procession after the ceremony.

In total, 2,640 commoners will make the cut. Among others, that includes 200 people associated with the various charities the couple work closely with and 1,200 people “from all corners of the U.K.” nominated by Lord Lieutenants.

Kensington Palace’s statement notes that they hope the latter group will represent a “broad range of backgrounds and ages, including young people who have shown strong leadership, and those who have served their communities.”

Responses have been mixed.
