Now that their historic split from the royal family is official, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry seem to be adjusting to their new residency in Canada rather well. The couple, whom the queen recently announced would be forfeiting their royal titles, has been carving out a home for themselves (and baby Archie, of course!) in North America — and sources suggest Meghan and Harry feel as though they have a new lease on life.

Since revealing on Jan. 8 that they wished to step back from their roles as senior royals, Meghan and Harry have endured a maelstrom of speculation. And while Harry went on record over the weekend to explain his and his wife’s decision to split their time between Canada and the U.K., there will undoubtedly continue to be those who disagree with their decision to effectively walk away from the monarchy. But from the sound of it, the Sussexes aren’t letting a little tabloid fodder get in the way of their fresh start.

A source told Us Weekly that Meghan is “thrilled” and “so happy” to have made the move to Canada. And Harry? “He’s really excited about the next chapter in their lives.” And, says the source, that includes a crash course in Real Life 101 from his wife. “[Meghan] doesn’t come from millions,” said another insider. “She’s worked hard to get to where she is today.”

As Princess Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, tells it, that will undoubtedly suit Harry just fine. “He was born a prince, but his long-term ambition is to be known as a humanitarian, like his mother,” Burrell told Us Weekly, saying he doubts Harry will miss being a full-blown member of the royal family.

One particular aspect of their royal split (and subsequent move to Canada) that Meghan is reportedly eager to explore is working to establish the couple’s financial independence. Her deal with Disney to do voice-over work for a film benefitting the Elephants Without Borders charity has been well-publicized. And similar career moves may be forthcoming.

“Meghan loves the idea of being the breadwinner. She has no plans to do another show like Suits, but Harry’s been encouraging her to do more voice-over work, writing, producing and directing in her free time,” said Us Weekly‘s insider.

Who knows? Since Harry has stepped into the realm of social documentaries with his work on an upcoming mental health project with Oprah Winfrey, maybe the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will even team up in the near future to produce film projects for the greater good. Regardless, it sounds as though they’re in a positive space for whatever comes next.
