Over the past few years, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have done a lot. In addition to releasing two docuseries for Netflix, a podcast on Spotify, and a best-selling memoir in Spare, the Duke and Duchess also launched their nonprofit, the Archewell Foundation. But while the Foundation’s mission to “show up, do good” has always been clear, it’s recently been swept up in the media for a surprising reason.

On May 13, Page Six reported that Archewell had been declared “delinquent” in an official letter from California’s attorney general, Rob Bonta. The status, according to the outlet, means they have lapsed in paying their 2023 registration fees, failed to submit its annual report and have therefore been ordered to stop raising or spending money for the time being.

“An organization that is listed as delinquent is not in good standing and is prohibited from engaging in conduct for which registration is required, including soliciting or disbursing charitable funds,” the letter detailed. “The organization may also be subject to penalties and its registration may be suspended or revoked by the Registry.”

Despite the initial report, however, Page Six has already confirmed that Archewell’s initial payment of fees was sent but not received, meaning it wasn’t their fault since the beginning. And, given the status change, a new form of payment has already been sent in its place.

Unsurprisingly, many fans of Markle and Harry became upset over the media storm around this payment. After all, payments and packages get lost and delayed every day.

“OMG they sent the paperwork, and the check..paperwork was received the check wasn’t (USPS loses so much stuff this isn’t surprising) and a new check has been sent. This truly isn’t news,” one commenter wrote Instagram. “It doesn’t mean the foundation is fake or anything, just a check didn’t get cashed. That’s literally all.”

“This isn’t news,” another user wrote. “It’s sensationalism and encouraging hate. Stop.”

“So basically they haven’t filed all their financial paperwork from 2023,” wrote another. “Well, neither have a lot of people.🙄”

Looks like Markle and Harry will always have the world ready to nitpick their every move, especially when it comes to their good deeds. Hopefully, this media storm blows over faster than that new check arrives in the mail!
