Meghan Markle & Prince Harry Are Being Shamed for Their Birthday Wish to Prince George & We're Tired

Prince George turned six on Monday, and the birthday boy enjoyed well-wishes from people across the globe. While the messages seemed sweet, fans of the royal family took issue with one in particular — Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were criticized for their birthday message to Prince George. Their sentiments may have appeared to be straight-forward, but detractors claim they left a key element out that would have made their birthday message more appropriate.

On Sunday, Prince William and Kate Middleton took to their official Instagram account to celebrate George turning six with a few cute, personal photos of their firstborn. Time flies when you’re being groomed to become a world leader! Not surprisingly, fans of the royal family quickly began flooding the comment feed with celebratory thoughts. However, it didn’t take long for the positive vibe to be interrupted by a royal ruckus: Harry and Meghan’s message. So, what horrible thing could the Duke and Duchess of Sussex possibly have said in order to draw such ire from the internet? “Happy birthday! Wishing you a very special day and lots of love!”

If you’re waiting for something more salacious, you’ll be waiting forever. That was the message in its entirety. Apparently, though, people are upset at how casually Harry and Meghan addressed the little prince. “Happy birthday to who? He is HRH PRINCE GEORGE!!!! Future King!” one irate fan wrote. Another proselytized, “He is HRH Prince George to you!!!! Don’t forget to mention!” Several critics even singled Meghan out, even though it’s unclear who actually wrote the post. “They still have to show deference and respect to him. It is the British royal family, not some Hollywood film set!” one fan directed a dig toward Meghan.

Of course, there were also plenty of people who came to Harry and Meghan’s defense, pointing out that there isn’t necessarily a need for such formalities since they are, in fact, George’s uncle and aunt. Plus, others noted that taking issue with such a seemingly sweet message goes to show that some people will find fault with just about anything. It’s no wonder Meghan recently admitted that living with the intense scrutiny of becoming a royal hasn’t been easy.
