One royal expert thinks that Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, the two women who most recently married into the royal family, may ultimately be the ones responsible for saving it. Author and Vanity Fair correspondent Katie Nicholl told Closer Magazine Thursday that the two will need to work closely together to save the monarchy.

Following a slew of controversy around Prince Andrew and his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, Nicholl told the magazine that it will be on Middleton and Markle to present a "united front."

"I think after a festive break, both Kate and Meghan will know that joint ventures to support the queen are not only part of their duty, but also good for the public image," Nicholl explained, the UK’s Daily Mail reports. "[Kate] knows the pressure is on her and Meghan to save the royal family, to an extent."

As the queen grows older, she's becoming more reliant on the younger generation to carry the reptuation of the monarchy forward into a new age.

"The queen turns 94 this year and there’s a plan in place to relieve her of her pressures, which is why she’s calling on the four to step up," Nicholl said. "Although the Cambridges and Sussexes have their own charities, I think the queen’s move towards retirement will force them to work closely with each other."

It's only 18 months before the queen turns 95, which is when her husband Prince Philip retired from public duties. There's been talk that the queen may do the same.

If she did, she would pass most of the formal duties of the monarchy on to her son Prince Charles, who is next in line for the throne.

Although there are ongoing rumors about a rift between Harry and William, Nicholl noted that Middleton is well known for her ability to make peace." That role may become increasingly important as more and more are expected from Harry, William, Kate, and Meghan moving forward into an era where Queen Elizabeth II is a less public figure.

"Kate’s been in the royal family a lot longer than Meghan and she has a natural tendency for teamwork," said Nicholl. "Behind the scenes, she’s known to play the role of peacemaker. She’s aware it’s not on anyone’s best interest to feud. If there’s a chance to make a secret pact with Meghan to team up more, she will want to do that."

Although Harry and William are much closer to the monarchy than Meghan or Kate, it may be up to the girls to save the day. What else is new?
