It’s always nice to hear an in-joke on your favorite show. That’s what happened during a season premiere this week, when Meghan Markle’s Suits character got a joking Season 9 shout-out.

Meghan played Rachel Zane for seven years on the popular USA legal drama, exiting the show in 2018 with her character’s wedding (mimicking her own upcoming nuptials to Prince Harry). The series, entering its final season, premiered last night with the arrival of Rachel’s husband, Mike Ross (Patrick J. Ross) returning to his former law firm. When asked how Rachel is doing, Ross’ character replies, “Good. In fact, if I told you how good, you probably wouldn’t believe me.” An obvious callback to Meghan’s own fairy-tale lifestyle and a sweet tribute to their departed star.

The former actress has accomplished a ton since leaving Suits, including raising the soon-to-be redheaded baby Archie and editing the latest issue of British Vogue. But she’s never forgotten her former costars or the show that brought her to prominence. Several members of the cast were invited to her royal wedding, and during Canada Day Prince Harry left a touching tribute to Meghan’s former hometown of Toronto, where the series was filmed.

Meghan’s had her fair share of controversy, but she’s never regretted leaving acting. In her first joint interview with Harry in November 2017 she said she felt this transition wasn’t “giving anything up.” The Duchess continued: “I just see it as a change. It’s a new chapter, right? And also, keep in mind, I’ve been working on [Suits] for seven years. We were very, very fortunate to have that sort of longevity on a series. I’ve ticked this box, and I feel very proud of the work I’ve done there, and now it’s time to work with [Harry] as a team.”
