Megan Thompson made a big announcement on 'ABC 15 Mornings.' The reactions were hilarious

Sometimes mistakes make the whole thing better.

That was the case Friday morning, when Megan Thompson, the weekday traffic anchor on “ABC 15 Mornings,” made a big announcement: She is pregnant.

These kinds of things can be silly or embarrassing, but Thompson’s was neither. It was clever and funny, in part because it didn’t go exactly as planned.

“I actually kind of messed it up,” Thompson said. “Well, ‘messed up’ might be a little strong. I was very nervous. This is big news to share.”

At the end of the show, Thompson began to report on a traffic blockage on the Red Mountain Freeway.

“I’m hearing from officials it’s going to get bigger and bigger over the next couple of months,” she said.

Nothing from anchors Kaley O’Kelly and Nick Ciletti.

“Kind of a bump in the road.”

Silence.

Finally, “You guys picking up what I’m putting down yet?”

Evidently not.

“I’m pregnant! I am the bump in the road.”

Ciletti and O’Kelly looked genuinely shocked.

“I really, really wanted to have that reaction from the two of them,” Thompson said. “And it was perfectly genuine and worth the holdout in my opinion. … It worked out really, really well in the most hilarious way.”

Weather anchor Iris Hermosillo just laughed. She was in on the whole thing, because she shares an office with Thompson, who tipped her off in case of morning sickness.

As funny as it was, this isn’t how Thompson planned the announcement. She envisioned having a graphic of her ultrasound pop up on the monitor she was standing in front of, but in her nervousness forgot about it.

All the better, as it turned out.

Thompson had been planning an announcement for a while

Thompson said she had been brainstorming ideas for a while. She figured she had to announce her pregnancy somehow.

“I’m the only talent who has to have a full body shot on them,” she said, “and I have to turn! How am I going to turn and block all these graphics the next couple of months? And I thought that might be kind of funny, to make that a bit.”

Judging by her co-workers' reaction, it worked.

“They were very, very genuinely shocked,” Thompson said, “and also very, very supportive.”

Thompson's baby is due at the end of January.
