Megan Mullally doesn’t hesitate when asked what she and pal Nathan Lane like to do together outside of work.

“We have sex,” she quips in the new issue of PEOPLE. “Not a lot of people know that, so this is perfect for your readers.”

Without missing a beat, Lane chimes in, “It's really the only heterosexual relationship I've had in my life and it's become so meaningful to me.”

Mullally, 64, and Lane, 67 — who are, respectively, married to actor Nick Offerman, 53, and Broadway producer Devlin Elliott, 51 — costar in the new comedy Dicks: The Musical, which is a showcase for their impeccable timing.

“We’re cut from the same cloth,” explains the Will & Grace Emmy winner. “We have that same kind of old-school feel for the rhythm of the comedy.”

The two first met in the 1990s and have worked together since on a 2014 one-night-only benefit concert of Guys and Dolls at Carnegie Hall, and later that year in Terrence McNally’s Broadway show It’s Only a Play.

But Dicks (which was granted a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement) is a different beast altogether. They play a divorced couple, long estranged, whose adult sons (movie cowriters Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson) are twins who were separated years ago and aim to get their parents back together.

Lane didn’t know what to make of the script when he read it. “I wasn’t sure about it. I thought it was outrageous,” he admits.

But after meeting with Sharp and Jackson, “I fell in love with them,” he continues. “This whole young generation, they’re not really concerned about what you think, what your judgment is about what they’re doing.”

“To be a part of something like this in a time when books are being banned and there’s a whole 'Don’t Say Gay' campaign . . . I just thought, for that reason alone, it is worth doing,” adds Lane. “It’ll be interesting to see what that reaction will be. There are people just waiting to be offended.”

Mullally admits she tried to make Lane laugh when they were filming together.

“There was one scene where we’re laying on this daybed in postcoital . . . or post-whatever crazy thing we’ve been doing,” she says. “The director just never yelled cut, and so I just kept crawling on top of Nathan. At a certain point Nathan was like, 'Cut. Cut. Please, God, cut!' It was going on and on.”

Adds Lane, “There was a lot of improv going on. I’ve never experienced that amount of freedom. Robin Williams and I would beg [The Birdcage director] Mike Nichols for what he used to call a 'free take' where he would allow us to improvise a bit. But this, every take was a free take.”

Dicks: The Musical, which costars Saturday Night Live's Bowen Yang and Megan Thee Stallion, is in select theaters Friday before opening wider on Oct. 13.
