There's a lot of hype surrounding the new Francis Ford Coppola sci-fi film "Megalopolis" featuring Wilmington actress Aubrey Plaza, and several other stars. The film is slated to debut later this month.

Plaza is also connected to other upcoming projects making a buzz that you should know about.

Here's the lowdown on "Megalopolis," two other upcoming film projects and more.

One of the most anticipated films of spring/summer is "Megalopolis," set to debut in competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on Friday, May 17.

The sci-fi film marks the return of legendary "Godfather" director Francis Ford Coppola.

"Megalopolis" is the director's long-awaited passion project, and it features Plaza, along with a star-studded cast that includes Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Giancarlo Esposito, Shia LaBeouf, Laurence Fishburne, Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight and singer Grace VanderWaal, per IMDB.

IMDB's synopsis for the film is "An architect wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster."

The film trailer features Driver nervously walking to the ledge of a tall building where it appears he's flirting with the idea of stepping over the edge. With one foot hovering over the ledge, Driver leans forward and yells "Time stop!" Now shaking terribly, the command allows Driver to pause time and catch himself from meeting his demise.

Aubrey Plaza on 'Emily the Criminal' TV series

Fans who loved Plaza in the 2022 crime thriller "Emily the Criminal" might be interested to hear that she's planning to adapt it as a TV mini series, Deadline reported last week. The new series is being developed by Legendary Television with direction from John Patton Ford, and with Plaza (who reportedly won't be acting in the series) executive producing, according to Deadline.

In the film "Emily the Criminal," Plaza is burdened by student debt and locked out of the job market. She becomes involved in credit card scams and quickly descends into the underworld of crime.

More details about the "Emily the Criminal" TV series are forthcoming.

John Waters and Aubrey Plaza team up for 'Liarmouth'

After rumors were swirling a few months ago that Aubrey Plaza was starring in John Waters' first film in 20 years, Waters would officially confirm the Wilmington native is on board for his upcoming movie "Liarmouth," which Variety reported in April.

The latest update is Waters, 78, was released Tuesday from a hospital, a day after his car was struck by a van at a red light in Timonium, Maryland, as reported by The Baltimore Sun on Tuesday, May 7.

It's unclear whether Waters' accident will have any impact on him directing "Liarmouth." Last month, Variety reported the director was still raising money for the film.

"'Liarmouth' is a film adaptation of Waters' novel, “Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad-Romance." The author describes his novel as "a hilariously filthy tale of sexual family dysfunction." It follows Marsha Sprinkle, a suitcase thief, master of disguise and scammer — the role Plaza is expected to star in.

Aubrey Plaza teams up again with Dan Levy

Earlier this year, Aubrey Plaza and Dan Levy teamed up for a funny commercial for Loewe.

The A-list actress from Wilmington and Levy, who both starred in the holiday romcom "Happiest Season," teamed up in a commercial for the Spain-based luxury fashion brand Loewe. In the two-minute ad, Plaza is in a spelling bee when Levy assigns her the word "Loewe," which she fails miserably at spelling — not just once but several times over 53 years.

Deadline reports that Plaza and Levy have both signed on to a live-action project "Animal Friends,'' which will also feature Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa and other stars.

Collider has reported that the film from Legendary is scheduled to hit theaters on Aug. 15, 2025.
