If there’s one movie we already have marked on our calendars for the fall season, it’s definitely Meg Ryan’s long-awaited return to the big screen What Happens Later. It’s been roughly eight years since the actress and director has appeared in a film — last seen in her directorial debut Ithaca. This time around, everything came naturally to Ryan once she got on set with her What Happens Later co-star David Duchovny, and the actress revealed what was the “easiest part” about filming the forthcoming romantic comedy.

“Truly, the easiest part was acting in it,” Ryan told comedy legend Carol Burnett in a conversation for Interview Magazine. What Happens Later doesn’t just mark Ryan’s return to acting, it’s also her second directorial feature. “I want to direct again just so I can sit in the chair, because I’m sure there’s a lot of things I missed,” she told Burnett.

Ryan admitted that while she “hadn’t done a role in a really long time,” the entire process “was fun with David. A lot of it was done in two shots. I’m proud of that,” she said. “I set up everything beforehand so that once we were there, it was just David and I trying to tell the truth.”

An unassailable icon of the rom-com genre, Ryan’s approach to filming What Happens Later seems so genuine and thoughtful based on her conversation with Burnett. The actress, who’s turned in memorable performances in films like When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and You’ve Got Mail, is poised for a major comeback. Mark your calendars — we’ll see you at the cinema on October 13!
