Meg Bennett, “The Young and the Restless” actress and soap opera writer, dies at 75

She had a six-year run on "The Young and the Restless" and earned a Daytime Emmy for "General Hospital" script-writing.

Meg Bennett, an actress who went from starring on soap operas to writing their scripts, died on April 11 of cancer, according to her official obituary in the Los Angeles Times. She was 75.

Bennett was born Helen Margaret Bennett on Oct. 4, 1948 and grew up in Pasadena, Calif. She majored in drama at Northwestern University, where she was also homecoming queen, and pursued an acting career in New York after graduation. She modeled for Cadillac commercials and made her stage debut in the off-Broadway musical Godspell. She also starred in Grease on Broadway, before moving back to California to begin her long career in soap operas.

Bennett played Julia Newman on The Young and the Restless, starting in 1980. Her major role lasted for six years and she then had sporadic cameo appearances after that, the most recently in 2020. She also appeared as the villainous Allegra Montenegro on General Hospital and played Megan Richardson on Santa Barbara.

While Bennett may have started in acting, she pivoted to writing for soaps. Her work included The Bold and the Beautiful, General Hospital, Santa Barbara, and Sunset Beach.

She earned five Daytime Emmy nominations for her writing, winning in 1995 for her work on General Hospital. She also met her husband, Robert Guza, Jr., while writing for General Hospital. They would have celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary this year.
