Kristen Welker isn't usually the subject of stories. Usually, she's talking about news with guests in her job as moderator of NBC's "Meet the Press."

Tuesday, May 14, was different. Welker announced on the Today Show that she and her husband, John, are expecting a second child by surrogate.

"John and I are thrilled to announce we are welcoming a second baby to our family with the help of another amazing surrogate," Welker told Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Hotb. "We're so excited. ... We hope that our news offers hope to others who are trying to build their own families."

Margot, their first child, was born in June of 2021.

Welker took over 'Meet the Press' in 2023

"If you had told me five years ago that I would be the mother of a beautiful little girl and that we would be about to welcome a second baby, I would not have believed you because it has been such a long journey,” Welker said on "Today." Welker has talked in the past about her struggles with infertility.

Welker, who took over as moderator of "Meet the Press" in the fall of 2023, garnered praise for her work moderating the third presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. She's fared less well on "Meet the Press," often criticized for a lack of meaningful follow-up questions. (To be fair, Chuck Todd, her predecessor, received the same criticisms.)
