The hot weather makes ice cream one of the dreamiest ways to cool down in the Des Moines metro area, and this summer brings some fun new ice cream news — something new from a local favorite, a newcomer in Ankeny and a truck from a show on Peacock handing out free treats for a short time.

Meet the new ice cream truck from Black Cat Ice Cream

If you like the clever flavor combinations at Alex Carter’s Black Cat Ice Cream in the Drake neighborhood, then you’ll love the kittenmobile ice cream truck on the prowl at events. The adorable food truck stopped by the Beaverdale Bluegrass Festival and Paws & Pints in Des Moines recently and serves all the shop’s regular flavors. It even meows.

In recent weeks, some of Black Cat’s new flavor combinations include watermelon marshmallow sherbet with a “rind” of marshmallow ice cream with candy watermelon “seeds;” jala-piña colada sorbet with pineapple, coconut, and candied jalapeños; and Barbenheimer, a combination of smoked cotton candy ice cream swirled with black cherry warheads candy swirl named for the “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” movie juggernauts released in July.

Carter also continues to work on new flavors of his ice cream nuggets. The latest — banana pudding — combines banana pudding ice cream coated with Nilla wafers and Cinnamon Toast Crunch, with caramel dipping sauce.

Find the original shop at 2511 Cottage Grove Ave in Des Moines every Tuesday through Sunday from 12:30 to 9 p.m. and follow the food truck on the shop’s Facebook page: facebook.com/desmoinesicecream or book it at truck@blackcaticecream.com.

You can find the ice cream truck at Teehee’s Comedy Club at 1433 Walnut St. in Des Moines on Thursday starting at 7 p.m. Local comedy veterans, rising stars, and surprise appearances from comics touring across the country take the stage in a free comedy showcase at 8 p.m.

Find the new shop at 617 SW Third St. in Ankeny every Monday through Thursday from 3 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.

Get some ‘Twisted Metal’ ice cream from Sweet Tooth

The infamous character from “Twisted Metal” known as Sweet Tooth is taking his ice cream truck on the road and bringing his sweetness to Des Moines this Thursday. Stop by the Heritage Carousel at 1801 Pennsylvania Ave. in Des Moines from noon to 2 p.m. where it stops to hand out free ice cream (while supplies last).

The 10-episode season of “Twisted Metal” from Peacock and Sony Pictures Television streams on Peacock now. “Twisted Metal” is a half-hour live-action TV series based on the classic PlayStation game series that mixes comedy with a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Consider it a funny “Mad Max” with a deranged clown driving an ice cream truck.

Editor's note: This post was updated with a new time and date for the "Twisted Metal" ice cream truck stop in Des Moines.
