Meet ‘The Dragon Ladies’ behind Oshkosh’s dragon boat races and more about the September event

OSHKOSH – A group of women known as “The Dragon Ladies” is planning the return of a popular event to the Fox Cities and northeast Wisconsin this September.

The Northeast Wisconsin (N.E.W.) Dragon Boat Festival, organized by the Northeast Wisconsin Chinese Association and the City of Oshkosh, is set for Sept. 16 at Leach Amphitheater, 303 Ceape Ave., in Oshkosh.

The event will feature teams of 20 paddlers and one drummer competing on the Fox River. Organizers said they hope to have 50 teams register. Registration and more information can be found at newdragonboat.com.

“The Dragon Ladies” are the N.E.W. Lee told the Oshkosh Northwestern in May, “This festival is about celebrating what we have in this region, all the different diverse communities we have and those big ideas around connectedness and belonging.”

What’s the focus of the event?

The event aims to focus on belonging to reverse population decline and strengthen community resiliency.

It also hopes to attract and retain talent to sustain the workforce and foster a greater sense of trust and social cohesion among local government, businesses, nonprofits and those served, the event website states.

What’s the schedule for the day?

Schedule for the day on Sept. 16 will be as follows:

  • 9 a.m. — Races start

  • 10 a.m. — Opening ceremony

  • 5 p.m. — Closing ceremony

The day will also include a global market and affinity fair, cultural performances and immersive activities.
