Laura Fernández Espeso will be the next General Manager of Spain’s Mediapro.

On January 1, 2025, the current CEO of production and sales subsidiary The Mediapro Studios will succeed Juan Ruiz de Gauna as General Manager of the overall business, as part of a major restructure of the Spanish media and broadcasting giant.

Alberto Vía will replace José Luis Rubio as Head of Mediapro Broadcast and Media Services on the same day next year.

Espeso began her career in indie film, working with directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Danis Tanovic, Ken Loach and Juan José Campanella. She then joined Spanish production giant Globomedia as Director of Film and later added leadership of International TV Development.

In 2015, she joined Mediapro as Head of International Content. Four years later, she took on management of TV and Corporate management of The Mediapro Studio and has been overall CEO since 2020, leading the creation, production and distribution strategy for the more than 100 scripted and unscripted titles such as HBO Asia drama The Head and upcoming BBC and ZDF co-production The Famous Five, which Nicholas Winding Refn is helming.

The changes have been implemented to coincide with Mediapro’s 30th anniversary and comes months after the board voted to have co-founder Jaume Roures step down from his role as Managing Partner.

Roures’ co-founder will remain CEO and President. He announced a new structure that will see the creation of a new Channels and Platforms unit and a brands division, Mediapro Experiences. The company’s Sports Rights Agency will now be led by Oliver Seibert.

“This restructuring will reinforce and refresh the group’s leadership in the audiovisual industry, integrating the entire value chain and guaranteeing the continuity and future of the company with five professionals who have been with Grup Mediapro for over 15 years and who are fully dedicated to the purpose, mission and values of the group,” said Benet.

“The people taking on the new roles not only represent a generational change, but are evidence of Grup Mediapro’s commitment to its inhouse talent.”
