Meat Puppets Announce Reissues of SST Records Catalog and New Live Album

Meat Puppets have teamed up with Megaforce Records for remastered reissues of the band’s classic SST Records output spanning 1981 through 1989. A new live album titled Camp Songs — recorded in the ’90s — has also been announced.

The first wave of the reissue campaign includes Meat Puppets’ noisy 1981 debut EP In a Car along with the more melodic offering of 1985’s Up on the Sun, each arriving October 6th.

A reissue of their seminal 1984 album Meat Puppets II — featuring the well-known numbers “Lake of Fire” and “Plateau” — is expected to drop in February, with the remaining three SST LPs (Mirage, Huevos, and Monsters) to follow.

“Our back catalog is an American treasure and should be in the Smithsonian,” boasted bassist and co-founder Cris Kirkwood in a press release. “Megaforce is doing a huge service to the planet to make sure our music continues to get into the hands of everyone who needs to have the coolest record collection on the block.”

Each reissue has been remastered from the original analog tapes and will available on 180-gram vinyl and CD, which include the bonus tracks originally featured on the 1999 Rykodisc versions.

“It was just like magic,” said Curt of the SST years. “You could make a record, with no thought to how much it will cost. There were no time worries, no money — but it wasn’t required. There wasn’t any production. You just go in and play. It was like you were doing a gig. Then we kind of figured out how to mess around with production, when we produced Up on the Sun. But even that was done in three days. No one was trying to figure out how to make things sell, they were just letting you do it.”

Along with the first-wave of SST reissues, Meat Puppets are also releasing a live album, Camp Songs, that was recorded during the post-SST, Too High to Die-era of 1991 through 1995 — a commercially successful period for the band.

“Back in those days, the Puppets were at peak powers,” said drummer Derrick Bostrom. “We played constantly in support of a hit album, so we got way out there.”
