On Wednesdays, we release trailers for the upcoming movie adaptation of the “Mean Girls” musical.

Paramount has debuted the first teaser for the new comedy from original “Mean Girls” screenwriter Tina Fey, who adapted her winning script into a Broadway musical and has now turned the stage adaptation back into a feature.

More from GoldDerby

As with the 2004 comedy classic, Fey again stars as the school’s put-upon guidance counselor, Ms. Norbury. Tim Meadows also returns from the film to play Principal Duvall. From the Broadway musical, Renee Rapp stars again as Regina George, the character made famous by Rachel McAdams. (Rapp replaced original Broadway star Taylor Louderman in the role.) Ashley Park, who played Gretchen Wieners in the stage musical, also features in this new film, albeit in a different role.

Angourie Rice stars as Cady Heron (played by Lindsay Lohan in the film), with “Moana” voice actress Auli’i Cravalho as Janis (played by Lizzy Caplan in the film) and Jaquel Spivey as Damian (played by Daniel Franzese in the film). Other notable actors include Jon Hamm as Coach Carr, Jenna Fisher as Cady’s mom, and Busy Philipps as Regina’s mom.

Here’s the plot summary, courtesy of Paramount.

From the comedic mind of Tina Fey comes a new twist on the modern classic, MEAN GIRLS. New student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called “The Plastics,” ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and her minions Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika). However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney), she finds herself prey in Regina’s crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school.

A funny thing about the new trailer for the musical version of “Mean Girls” is that it doesn’t promote the fact it’s a musical. Instead of featuring any of the show’s original songs, the teaser uses the Olivia Rodrigo track “get him back!” as its musical accompaniment.

“Mean Girls,” which is a musical, is out January 12, 2024.
