McGuire Moorman Lambert’s Swedish Hill is opening in Westlake. Here's what we know
Austin’s fanciest hospitality group is making its first foray into one of Austin’s toniest neighborhoods.
The prolific and stylish McGuire Moorman Lambert Hospitality, the team behind Jeffrey’s, Clark's, Sammie's and more than a dozen other restaurants and bars in Austin (and beyond), plans to open a location of iconic bakery and cafe Swedish Hill at 3663 Bee Cave Road. The new Swedish Hill will be located across the parking lot from Breed & Co. in the space formerly home to Blue Dahlia Bistro.
The Westlake location, which does not yet have an opening date, will be the second for the iconic bakery that has been in business under different ownership for 50 years. MML purchased the beloved Clarksville-area bakery from Jim Murphy in 2018 and changed the spelling of the business's original name from Sweetish Hill. The company has not released any details, but expect a menu of baked goods, salads, sandwiches, cafe classics and a deli case for prepared foods.
This will be only the third concept west of MoPac (joining Ski Shores and Pool Burger) for MML, which has focused most of its energies on Central and South Austin since opening Lamberts in 2006. The company also operates restaurants in Houston, New Orleans and Aspen, with expansion of the Clark's brand also slated for California.
What's going on with the West Sixth Street Swedish Hill?
MML closed the West Sixth Street location of Swedish Hill in late 2023 to prepare for the development of a hotel and mixed-use development titled Sixth and Blanco. Swedish Hill will eventually return as one of the hotel’s cornerstone tenants, but in the meantime, a few paces away at 1128 W. Sixth St., the group is now operating what it has dubbed "Little Swedish," selling coffee, baked goods and a take-away menu of sandwiches and prepared foods
Patricia Bauer-Slate and Tom Neuhaus opened the original Sweetish Hill in the Swede's Hill neighborhood at 14th and Waller streets in 1975. It moved to the Clarksville area in the late 1970s, with Murray purchasing it in 1990.
The closure of the Westlake Blue Dahlia, the lease for which ended in April, leaves only a San Marcos location for the French-inspired cafe that got its start in 2007 on East 11th Street before the coronavirus led to its closure in 2020.
