The Love Jones: The Musical soundtrack will feature all original songs performed (and primarily penned) by the play’s cast of R&B stars. The cast/soundtrack also boasts singers Marsha Ambrosius and Chrisette Michele, as well as actor/singers Tony Grant (Tyler Perry’s Love Thy Neighbor) and Chaz Shepherd (The Color Purple). MC Lyte executive-produced the soundtrack with the musical’s producer Melvin Childs.

The play will officially open its national 12-week run on Sept. 14 at Philadelphia’s Merriam Theater, with stops in Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles and more cities through December. A second 12-week run is slated for January 2017. The soundtrack will be available for purchase at each performance, as well as through LoveJonesTheMusical.com.

Written by Timothy Allen Smith and directed by Zadia Ife, Love Jones: The Musical is neither a sequel nor a straight depiction of the movie that starred Nia Long and Larenz Tate as the love-struck couple. “The characters are the same, but there are different nuances, as the play tells stories about the ups and downs of relationships,” says Childs. “Fans will understand when they see the play and how the characters mesh with the movie.”

The original Love Jones: The Music soundtrack featured Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, Dionne Farris, the Brand New Heavies and Xscape. The album peaked at No. 3 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and No. 16 on the Billboard 200.
