Maya Rudolph Has a Magical Bill Murray Story

Finally, we have an explanation for how Bill Murray can materialize in the most unexpected of places, be it a bachelor party, a karaoke lounge, or — in Maya Rudolph’s case — backstage at The Jane Pauley Show: the dude is magical. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the actress told the host about her first encounter with Murray, whom she co-stars with in the new holiday special, A Very Murray Christmas, premiering on Netflix on Dec. 4. At the time, Rudolph was a few years into her seven-season stint on Saturday Night Live and was feeling a little out of sorts. “It was a moment where I was feeling, ‘Do I do anything here? Do people like me?’” she remembers in the above clip.

It was this exact moment that Murray magically swooped into her life to cheer her up. Spotting her backstage, the SNL legend approached Rudolph and literally carried her off “like a fresh kill” for a private one-on-one pep talk. In between shots of scotch, Murray imparted words of wisdom about being part of the Not Ready for Primetime Players and gave her some much-needed encouragement. And then, just like that, he vanished into thin air like a wizard. Who needs Harry Potter when we’ve got Bill Murray?

Jimmy Kimmel Live airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on ABC
