As fall festival season marches on, Netflix has begun to rev its engines on “May December.” The Todd Haynes film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May before being acquired by the streaming platform. It will next be seen as the opening night film at the New York Film Festival later this month before it hits select theaters on November 17 and Netflix itself on December 1.

Here’s the logline for the already acclaimed film: “Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, a married couple (Julianne Moore and Charles Melton) buckles under the pressure when an actress (Natalie Portman) arrives to do research for a film about their past.”

Former Best Actress winners Portman and Moore, respectively, are already popular picks in the 2024 Oscars Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress races, while Melton is a darkhorse contender in Best Supporting Actor.

Reviews out of Cannes were strong, with Haynes highlighted for his strength in crafting great performances with his actors. When the New York Film Festival announced “May December” as its opening film, the festival’s artistic director, Dennis Lim, said something similar. “‘May December’ is a tour-de-force of writing, acting, and directing: a film built on moment-to-moment surprise, as thought-provoking as it is purely pleasurable. It cements Todd Haynes’s place as one of American cinema’s most brilliant mischief-makers and as an all-time great director of actors,” Lim said.
