The story of how Tyler Perry went from homeless and hopeful to one of the entertainment industry’s biggest success stories is coming to the small screen. Now a writer, actor, filmmaker, studio head, and media titan, the 53-year-old’s humble beginnings are set to be explored in a new documentary.

Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story is set to debut on Prime Video on Nov. 17. The project is explained as a nod to Perry’s mother’s love and a tender, intimate portrait of him as a visionary and innovator. Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz directed the documentary under the Bekele Films banner.

Bekele, as well as Jasmine K. White, and Asante White, serve as producers.

An official description of the film examines the Hollywood mogul as a man working humbly to heal his childhood trauma by transforming his pain into promise, following his harrowing but faithful road to the top of an industry that didn’t always include him.

Maxine’s Baby has been in the works for a decade. The directors set to use their unfettered access to highlight the inner world of a man as he becomes a father, a media magnate, and shares a profound lesson on remembering where you come from on the road to where you want to go.

In its debut, Maxine’s Baby will be available to stream in more than 240 countries and territories globally. The project, though focusing on the Madea Goes To Jail creator’s story, is not a part of his four-picture film deal with Amazon studios, cemented in November 2022.
