EXCLUSIVE: Beta Film’s Crown-esque high-end drama series Maxima has sold to networks in Lat Am, Israel and across Europe.

The series, which is one of the German major’s biggest being shopped at the London TV Screenings, will air on Hot in Israel and on Warner Bros. Discovery networks across Latin America following the deals. Other buyers include Croatia’s HRT, Austria’s ORF and broadcasters in Latvia and Slovakia.

Millstreet Films’ Maxima tells the story of Dutch queen Máxima Zorreguieta and is one of the few shows about a living royal out there. Dropping on The Netherlands’ Videoland from April 20, it takes up the story the moment the Argentina-born queen appears at the Dutch crown prince’s side. Heated discussions subsequently erupt about her father’s political career in the Argentinian Videla regime – something she never faced in her own circles.

Máxima is portrayed by Argentinian rising star Delfina Chaves (The Secret of the Greco Family) and Crown Prince Willem-Alexander by Martijn Lakemeier (The East). German star actor Sebastian Koch (The Lives of Others, Your Honour) takes on the role of Claus von Amsberg, Willem-Alexander’ father, and Elsie de Brauw (The Death of My Mother) plays Queen Beatrix.

Directed by Saskia Diesing together with Joosje Duk and Iván López Núñez, Máxima was shot over the course of last summer in New York, Spain, the Netherlands, and Belgium. The script is written by Marnie Blok, Ilse Ott, Judith Goudsmit, Diede Zillinger Molenaar, Sytske Kok, and Marcela Guerty. Máxima is produced by Rachel van Bommel of Millstreet Films, in co-production with FBO and Beta Film, with the support of the Dutch Film Fund Production Incentive, the Creative Europe MEDIA program, and the Belgian Tax Shelter. The series is based on Máxima Zorreguieta: Motherland by Marcia Luyten, published by De Bezige Bij.

The news comes in a busy London TV Screenings week for Beta that has seen it sell a number of shows to Australia’s SBS as part of an ongoing multi-year license deal.

Its catalog is led by Maxima, which we revealed Beta had picked up in July last year, and big-budget European epic Rise of the Raven, which tells the story of the army commander who defeated the vast Ottoman army in the Battle of Belgrade in 1456.

Beta’s screening took place Tuesday at the Century Club.
