New Max movies: all of the new films to stream in April 2024

Welcome to TechRadar's new Max movies article. Every month, we update this guide with a complete list of the new movies that are set to arrive on HBO Max's successor over the next 31 days.

Normally, you'd expect to find nothing more than a full rundown of new film coming to Max in May in an article of this ilk. With so many movies set to land on one of the world's best streaming services shortly, though, you might need a hand determining which ones are worth your time. That's where our spotlight section comes in. Each month, we handpick a bunch of new Max movies that – whether they're good or bad – we consider to be must-see. You'll see that section after this guide's introduction, with the full list following it in a separate section.

New Max movies: the best films to stream in May

The original Mad Max movie trilogy

Release date: May 1
RT score: 81% to 93% (critics); 49% to 86% (audience)

With Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga set to race into theaters in May 2024, now is as good a time as any to stream the first three Mad Max films.

The George Miller-directed flicks star controversial actor Mel Gibson as Max Rockatansky, a police officer-turned-reclusive drifter as he travels across a dystopian Australia and becomes embroiled in various storylines centered around warring factions, ecocide, and human survival.

Mad Max 2 is arguably the strongest of the trio, but all three are worth watching, if nothing else for how the franchise evolves between films and their practical effects, dangerous stunt work, and post-apocalyptic creativity. 2015’s unmissable Mad Max: Fury Road, which sees Tom Hardy replace Gibson as the titular character, is also on Max.

Silver Linings Playbook

Release date: May 1
RT score: 92% (critics); 86% (audience)

Silver Linings Playbook is a romantic comedy-drama written and directed by David O'Russell (American Hustle, Joy) that’s based on Matthew Quick’s novel of the same name.

It stars Bradley Cooper as Patrizio "Pat" Solitano Jr, an individual with bipolar disorder who moves back in with his parents (played by Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver) after a recent divorce. However, it isn’t long before he meets Tiffany Maxwell (played by Jennifer Lawrence), a widower who makes a deal with Pat to get him and his wife back together if he helps Tiffany win a dance competition.

A flick with numerous awkward laugh-out-loud and dramatic moments, Silver Linings Playbook marries humor and melodrama with a sharpness and sensitivity that few other mental health-driven movies have found a pleasing balance between. Stick it on your new Max movies list ASAP.

Turtles All The Way Down

Release date: May 2
RT score: TBC

A Max Original film based on John Green’s bestselling novel, Turtles All The Way Down stars Isabela Merced (The Last of Us season 2, Madame Web) as Aza Holmes, a High Schooler whose OCD and anxiety attacks prevent her from living the life she wants to lead. When she reconnects with childhood crush Davis Pickett (Felix Mallard), Aza must decide whether to let her mental health disorders hold her back or not.

A romantic drama that, like Silver Linings Playbook, places a big emphasis on exploring mental illness and its effects on people’s everyday lives, Turtles… seems like it could be the sleeper hit of May’s new Max movies lineup.

The Iron Claw

Release date: May 10
RT score: 89% (critics); 94% (audience)

The latest of A24’s acclaimed film library to join Max since the duo agreed a landmark, first-rights streaming deal in late 2023, The Iron Claw is a biographical sports drama that shines an overdue light on one of wrestling’s most noteworthy and supposedly cursed families: The Von Erichs.

Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, and Harris Dicksinon lead an all-star ensemble cast as Kevin, Kerry, and David, the three Von Erich brothers who strived for wrestling immortality under the stewardship of their domineering father, former wrestler, and World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) owner Jack ‘Fritz’ (Holt McCallany).

A facts-based tale that dramatizes the tragedies and successes that defined the Von Erichs from the last 1970s to the early 1990s, The Iron Claw is a hard-hitting, action-packed, and surprisingly poignant flick that’ll leave you on its canvas long after the credits have rolled.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Release date: May 26
RT score: 29% (critics); 63% (audience)

The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) might have died and been reborn – by James Gunn and Peter Safran – under the duo's new DC Cinematic Universe (DCU) brand, but the aforementioned franchise’s projects are still being recycled through Max’s film back catalog.

Among that contingent is Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman film, which saw The Caped Crusader and Son of Krypton finally duke it out on the big screen with very mixed results. Indeed, as our Batman v Superman review stated, it’s a “strange, beguiling blockbuster” centered around Batman and Superman that just doesn’t stick the superhero landing.

Anyway, we’re getting new separate films starring the iconic duo as part of DCU Chapter One – James Gunn’s Superman movie, which arrives in July 2025, and an adaptation of acclaimed Batman comic series The Brave and The Bold – that should blow away any lingering memories we have of Batman v Superman in the years ahead.
