Mavis Staples Announces New Album With Jeff Tweedy

Mavis Staples has announced a new album. If All I Was Was Black features 11 new songs written by frequent collaborator Jeff Tweedy, who also produced the album. Below, listen to the title track and check out the cover art and full tracklist. Jeff Tweedy says of the album’s political message, “I’ve always thought of art as a political statement in and of itself—that it was enough to be on the side of creation and not destruction. But there is something that feels complicit at this moment in time about not facing what is happening in this country head on.” Staples comments, “You can’t stop me. You can’t break me. I’m too loving. These songs are going to change the world.” If All I Was Was Black is out November 17 via Anti.

Staples’ most recent album was 2016’s Livin’ on a High Note. This year, she guested on Arcade Fire’s new song “I Give You Power.”
