Matthew Perry’s former fiancé, Molly Hurwitz, expressed her “tremendous gratitude” for their loving but complicated relationship in a tribute shared on Instagram.

Hurwitz and Perry started dating in 2018 and got engaged in 2020 but decided to call it off in 2021. In her note, Hurwitz said she “loved [Perry] deeper than I could comprehend” but acknowledged the actor — who long struggled with addiction — was “complicated, and he caused pain like I’d never known.”

She continued: “No one in my adult life has had a more profound impact on me than Matthew Langford Perry. I have tremendous gratitude for that, for everything I learned from our relationship.” (Hurwitz also made sure to mention Al-Anon, calling it “an invaluable resource for those who love someone struggling with this destructive disease.”)

Hurwitz began her note by saying how much Perry would’ve loved “that the world is talking about how talented he was.” She recalled re-watching Friends with him in the lead-up to the show’s 2021 reunion special and Perry’s penchant for celebrating (rightly so) his performances: “Fuck, I was so good!!!… See what I did there???”

“We rewound and studied scenes,” Hurwitz said. “Our respect and appreciation of humor is something that connected us. Being with him as he rediscovered his brilliance was magical.”

Perry died Oct. 28, at the age of 54, in an apparent drowning at his home in Los Angeles. The official cause of death, however, still hasn’t been determined and will reportedly require additional investigation by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office. The Los Angeles Police Department is also looking into it, with Capt. Scot Williams saying that “the cause of death may not be known for some time, but at this point foul play is not suspected.”

Since his death, tribute story Perry have poured in from his Friends casemates – who released a joint statement — as well as the show’s co-creators. Friends, peers, and admirers like Hank Azaria, Gwyneth Paltrow, Salma Hayek, Adele, Charlie Puth, Fran Drescher, Allison Janney, and Octavia Spencer shared tributes, too.
