Are Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson related? Here's what we know

Rumor has it that Texas alumnus Matthew McConaughey could be related to fellow actor Woody Harrelson.

It's never been confirmed, but that could be changing soon. Retired television personality Maury Povich recently offered to help the two take a DNA test, and McConaughey was all smiles while watching the video.

"I’ll even get my showtime color back in my hair. Woody’s got my number. I’m ready," Povich said.

"I like the way you’re thinking," McConaughey said in reaction to the video message.

During a podcast interview, McConaughey mentioned that his mother, Mary Kathlene McCabe, may have linked up with Harrelson's father during a divorce. During a family vacation, she brought up a special connection she may have had with Harrelson’s father, Charles Harrelson, bringing about the hypothesis that the two may be half-brothers.

In an interview with Access Daily, McConaughey says, "We're all sitting around in Greece one night talking and my mom out of nowhere in a little pause goes, ‘Oh, I knew your dad, Woody … just saying, we might have frequented the same similar place out in West Texas one time when he was on furlough.'

Who is Woody Harrelson's dad?

Charles Harrelson, father of Woody Harrelson, was notoriously known for his involvement in the 1979 killing of U.S. District Judge John Wood Jr. in San Antonio — the first federal judge killed in the 20th century. He was linked to Jamiel "Jimmy" Charga, of El Paso, Texas, who was accused of leading the the conspiracy to assassinate Wood.

Charles Harrelson, who was convicted for the murder, prompted one of the biggest FBI manhunts before the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. He died in 2007 of a heart attack while serving two life sentences at the Supermax federal prison in Florence, CO.

Woody Harrelson says they want to get DNA tested

The two movie stars have been friends for nearly two decades, starring in their first movie together in 1999’s "EDtv." Their family saga isn't new, with Harrelson mentioning that the two have been wanting to figure out their relation for a while.

"The thing is we want to go and test," Harrelson said on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" in April.

"But for him, it's a much more big deal. I mean, he feels like he's losing a father. But I'm like, no you're gaining a different father and a brother."
