Matthew McConaughey Once Had A Near-Death Encounter With One Of Australia's Deadliest Animals

Matthew McConaughey is a cool cat but he revealed that he was able to keep his cool when he had a run-in with one of Australia's deadliest animals back in the day.

McConaughey appeared on the popular Australian morning show, "Today" where he revealed why the brown snake is his favorite animal from down under.

“When I was here, I almost stepped on [a brown snake]. I should have been bitten,” he told the "Today" host.

“It was a bit dark. It went right through my legs and gave me bit of a scare.”

He did not realize it at the time, but he described that his friend was shocked when he saw how close McConaughey came to needing a visit to the emergency room.

“My friend came over, and they caught it and said, ‘That’s a brown snake, mate… that could have really sucked.’ That’s [why it’s] my favorite animal because it didn’t bite me,” McConaughey said.

How Deadly Is The Brown Snake?

The brown snake is native to eastern and central Australia and is considered the second-most venomous land snake. Adults can grow up to seven feet long and it has become more common to find them on the outskirts of urban development because of the increased presence of the common mouse.

One bite from the deadly species can cause severe hemorrhaging, hypotension, nausea and vomiting, and cardiac arrest. If bitten, victims should move as little as possible and be transported to a hospital immediately so the proper anti-venom can be administered.

It Happened When He Lived Down Under

During his interview, Matt detailed his experience living in Australia when he was a young man. He studied abroad in Warnervale, a town on the outskirts of Sydney.

"Like most young men and women, you graduate high school and you're not sure what the heck you want to do. Mom had this idea of being an exchange student, it was between Sweden and Australia. Australia spoke English, I said, 'I'm off.' Two weeks later, I'm here, at the outskirts of Sydney."

He Loves Instagram So Far

McConaughey also spilled the tea about recently joining Instagram for his 50th birthday and said he was enjoying the social media platform.

"So far, so good. You know, as I said in my opening post, I'm not sure how much I'm going to enjoy the dialogue but I think I'll enjoy the monologue," he told the "Today" host.

Since joining earlier this month, the actor has shared several posts with his most recent one being a picture of his wife, Camila Alves McConaughey, and his son.

The photo showed mother and son embracing on the top of a mountain while they look out into the beautiful nature scene. Matt captioned the pic, "skywalkers."
