Matthew McConaughey Defends Rio, Calls Bad Press ‘Partial Propaganda’

Actor Matthew McConaughey stopped by Olympic Late Night, NBC’s temporary Olympics-themed late night hosted by Ryan Seacrest. McConaughey’s been hanging out and having a great time taking in some Olympic events in the home country of his wife, Camila Alves. Seacrest asked McConaughey what he thought of Rio as a host city. “I think they’re doing damn well,” McConaughey said. “Now look, the compass for Brazilians, and you Brazilians know this, your compass is desire. It just is.”

McConaughey hinted that the negative press Rio received before the Games possibly wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. “Let’s remember, Brazil wasn’t chosen because of outstanding qualifications. That’s not why it was chosen,” he said. “We heard a lot of things leading up to these Games that now feel like partial propaganda — you know, as far as the scares and the negative press that was out.”

McConaughey also talked about meeting some of the athletes and learning about what drove them to work so hard to get there.

“The answer was, ‘Chasing the dream,’” he said.
