Origins is Consequence‘s recurring series which gives artists a place to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, Matthew Logan Vasquez takes listeners through “Parade.”

Singer-songwriter Matthew Logan Vasquez, known for his work in indie rock band Delta Spirit, has dropped the latest single from his upcoming solo album, Frank’s Full Moon Saloon, out February 16th, 2024. Titled “Parade,” the song boasts contributions from Scott McMicken of Dr. Dog and features a slow, western-tinged acoustic guitar. Along with this new track, Vasquez has announced an upcoming tour that will run through the first half of 2024.

With beautiful background vocals and a smooth guitar solo making up the second half of the track, Vasquez brings his incredible talent to a new sonic landscape. Although the track is a re-recording of a tune found on Delta Spirit’s 2007 LP, Ode to Sunshine, those previously familiar with the song are bound to find something new to love about this incarnation.

The new recording finds Vasquez pulling together influences from both acts he loves and acts he’s played in. “[This song] sounds the way it sounds because I was so inspired by those guys,” he says of Dr. Dog in particular. “They’re the best band and best dudes. It seemed like a no brainer to reach out and to ask Scott to add his essence on this new recording. He’s such a cut above the rest.”

The new North American tour kicks off in February with a Texas residency, followed by two more legs that run through April and May, respectively. Check out the dates below and get tickets here.

2008 Housing Crisis:

“Parade” was written in the midst of all hell breaking loose in the financial world. It was crazy watching my older friends have to walk away from their homes because of ballooning interest rates.

Dr. Dog:

I’ll never forget seeing Dr. Dog at the Casbah in San Diego in ’07. We opened for them up the West Coast with the Teeth. They later took us on a whole national tour. Those were some of the best days of my life. “Parade” sounds the way it sounds because I was so inspired by those guys. They’re the best band and best dudes. It seemed like a no brainer to reach out and to ask Scott to add his essence on this new recording. He’s such a cut above the rest.

Older Friends (Specifically Frank)

My buddy Frank is 75 years old. He has a garage/saloon in our neighborhood that all us neighbors hang out in. It’s called the Full Moon Saloon. It was used as a set for my video “Trailer Park.” Frank and his wife Rena are an extra set of grandparents to our kids. We love them! Last winter I brought my band to the Saloon and we re-recorded a ton of music from my past. I wanted to have versions of these songs that were a bit more straightforward for them to enjoy.

Delta Spirit:

Delta Spirit is the band I [have] fronted for since 2005. I feel immense gratitude towards the guys in the band and our fans. They’ve given me everything. I/we wish DS was viable enough to keep going but sadly that’s not the case. We’re not broken up. that’s not really a term we’d ever use, but after the last tour, there’s no rush to go back into the fray. I think our last two records are so cool, but it’s hard to share a vision when we’re all living such different lives with varying degrees of interest in the band.

Let It Be… Naked/Taylor’s Way/Re-Recorded Albums:

I love new versions of songs or albums. They cast more light into what the song meaning. In this case having my Texas band plus McMicken in the mix and such a cool dimension to this song. We cut it live and then McMicken sent his vocals, guitar, and jungle sounds via email. Adding those McMicken elements fit so hand in glove as if he was in the room with us.
