Matt McCormick's Clothing Brand is an Investigation of American Nostalgia

With Americana making a major comeback, Matt McMormick is a name you should know. A multimedia artist, McMormick is the founder of One of These Days, which features major themes of Western culture that regularly includes cowboy hats, boots, denim, and anything else you could possibly think of associated with the West. Rather than a strict celebration of this history, his new brand—like his previous art—simultaneously sentimentalizes and challenges our nostalgia for the American west.

Speaking of his collections, there’s a brand new one that just came out a few days ago that’s inspired by the culture of Upstate New York. Entitled Northern Sky, the new range is inspired by the landscape, culture, and art of New York’s Hudson Valley.

This 52-piece collection, all of which were produced in limited numbers in Los Angeles, includes standout styles such as the Northern Sky Jacket, a classic British hunting jacket which is done-up in rugged American workwear materials, vintage inspired Trucker Jackets, and an assortment of new logo tees and sweats that feature imagery pulled from, and inspired by, McCormick’s visual art.

Here’s what McCormick had to say about this new drop:

“I’ve been fascinated by the creative cauldron that is Upstate New York ever since first visiting friends at Bard College in Tivoli, NY well over a decade ago. Having grown up in Northern California, there’s a lot of similarities between the areas. The lush green of the environment. The slower pace. The incredible music; we had The Grateful Dead, they had Bob Dylan and The Band recording at the Big Pink in Saugerties (which was my soundtrack through the entire design process).

But there’s also something unique about the Hudson Valley - a calmness that reverberates creative energy that doesn’t exist anywhere else. And that’s what I set out to capture with this collection. The imagery, the colors, the materials, the silhouettes - they all work together to transport the wearer, to immerse them in a very specific world.”
