This will be the first film in the franchise not helmed by Lily or Lana Wachowski.

Warner Bros. is gearing up to re-enter The Matrix — but this time, there won’t be a Wachowski at the helm.

The studio has announced plans to continue the franchise, with a fifth Matrix movie now in development. It will be the first installment in the cyber-action film series without either Lana or Lily Wachowski as directors. Instead, Cabin in the Woods and The Martian screenwriter Drew Goddard will serve as director, pen the script, and produce with his Goddard Textiles partner, Sarah Esberg.

Lana Wachowski, who helmed 2021’s The Matrix: Resurrections, is attached to executive produce.

While no plot details were specified, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman teased a story that will delve deeper into the franchise’s fantasy world, without straying too far from its roots.

“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” Ehrman said in a statement obtained by Entertainment Weekly. “The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”

Goddard previously earned an Oscar nomination for writing The Martian, the sci-fi adaptation directed by Ridley Scott. He is also known for penning Cloverfield, World War Z, and Bad Times at the El Royale, the latter of which he also directed.

“It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life,” Goddard shared in a statement. “Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”

No details were shared regarding the the film's cast. The most recent installment saw the return of franchise stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as Neo and Trinity, while also featuring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
