Warner Bros. is officially betting on another Matrix film. The studio has announced the fifth film in the franchise and is expected to step away from having Lana or Lily Wachowski as directors. While that is the case, Lana Wachowski is still expected to executive produce the film. Drew Goddard will be the director on Matrix 5 and will also pen the script with Sarah Esberg.

So far, the studio has not confirmed if Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be returning to the fifth film. In the previous movies, they were the titular characters and carried the plot line as the iconic Neo and Trinity duo. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris and Priyanka Chopra Jonas who have joined the franchise in recent iterations are set to return.

Warner Bros. has been hush-hush with the details of the film. While the plot has not been revealed, Jesse Ehrman recently teased that the story will continue to expand the fantasy world. In a statement, Ehrman said, "Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters. The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis' spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio." Goddard said on taking on the role as the director, "It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly's exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world." The Matrix franchise kicked off in 1990 with the most recent, The Matrix: Resurrections released in 2021. Stay tuned for more news on the franchise expansion.
