It's been 16 years since we last ventured into The Matrix, but now we have a release date for the highly-anticipated Matrix 4.

Warner Bros has announced that the film, which sees Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprise their iconic roles as Neo and Trinity, is set to hit cinemas on May 21, 2021.

It's an interesting choice of date for the studio considering that's also the release date for Reeves' John Wick 4. Which may give fuel to fan theories that Neo and Wick are connected.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Frozen 2 and Mindhunter star Jonathan Groff has been cast in Matrix 4.

He'll join Aquaman villain Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's rumoured to be playing a young Morpheus.

Jada Pinkett Smith will also be back as Niobe, while Jessica Henwick and Neil Patrick Harris will play new characters in the franchise.

The film will be written and directed by Lana Wachowski, who is currently adapting concepts she developed with sister Lilly Wachowski for a new screenplay, collaborating with The Lazarus Project author Aleksandar Hemon and writer David Mitchell.

"Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now," Lana previously stated.

"I'm very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends."
