Matlock Reboot, Wayans Sitcom Poppa’s House Pushed to 2024-25 Season at CBS

CBS’ newly announced winter schedule features a pair of glaring omissions.

In revealing its midseason lineup on Monday (go here for the full list of premiere dates), the Eye Network confirmed that its Matlock reboot, starring Kathy Bates, and Wayans comedy Poppa’s House have both been pushed to the 2024-25 season.

Both projects snagged series orders at CBS in May, alongside the Good Wife spinoff Elsbeth (which stars Carrie Preston and will debut Thursday, Feb. 29 at 10/9c). But as this year’s simultaneous WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes wore on, it was speculated that broadcast networks might push some of their new series to next fall — which ABC has already done with the Kaitlin Olson detective drama High Potential.

Inspired by the Andy Griffith classic of the same name, CBS’ Matlock “reimagining” stars Bates as Madeline Matlock, a “brilliant septuagenarian” who “rejoins the work force at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases and expose corruption from within,” the logline reads. Skye P. Marshall (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Jason Ritter (Parenthood), David Del Rio (The Baker and the Beauty) and Leah Lewis (Nancy Drew) co-star.

Poppa’s House, meanwhile, stars Damon Wayans as a “legendary talk radio host who has his point of view challenged at work when a new female co-host (played by Half & Half‘s Essence Atkins) is hired, and at home where he finds himself still parenting his adult son (Happy Endings‘ Damon Wayans Jr.), a brilliant dreamer who is trying to pursue his passion while being a responsible father and husband.” Tetona Jackson (Home Economics) also stars.

CBS’ midseason lineup will get underway after the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 11, with the Justin Hartley vehicle Tracker debuting that night after the game; more details here.
