Masterful Fan-Made Trailer Turns The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Into Dramatic Movie

Fans of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air are begging for a revival after a fan-made movie trailer surfaced online earlier this week.

Much like the original, starring Will Smith and Alfonso Ribeiro, the trailer tells the story of a teenager named Will from West Philadelphia that moves in with his aunt and uncle in Bel-Air after getting into “one little fight.”

While the sitcom, which premiered in 1990 and remains a staple in American culture, was for the most part light-hearted, mega-fan and director’s Morgan Cooper version is much darker and appears in the trailer as if it is a dramatic feature film.

Bel-Air, as Cooper dubbed his version, is set in modern day and explores subtle themes of police brutality, gang crime and wealth inequity.

Cooper’s trailer does, however, feature Carlton’s famous dance.

“Like most 90’s kids, I grew up watching Fresh Prince. Even as a kid, I always thought there was more to the story… so I decided to make this” Cooper wrote on Twitter Sunday.

The trailer has since racked up over 600,000 views and has received nods from actors like Alyssa Milano. “This is f—— brilliant,” Milano, 46, tweeted of the trailer.

Smith, 50, himself has seen the trailer also, according to Cooper, Okayplayer reported.

“A lot has happened in the last 48 hours and continues to happen,” Cooper told the outlet. “People have really taken to this.”

“I felt like growing up I always thought there was more to the story more behind the sitcom format,” Cooper continued to Okayplayer.

“I thought, ‘Wow, we could take this story and really ground it in reality in a really dramatic way.'”

Cooper first began working on the project six months ago, partnering with Sun Squared Media.

He also called on the help of a plethora of newcomers with Jerry Madison playing Will, Jelani Talib as Carlton Banks and Granvile O’Neal as Uncle Phil. James Avery played Uncle Phil in the original. He died in 2014 at just 68.

“It was an intensive process,” Cooper told Okayplayer. “When we first made this thing I was really confident in the art. The internet’s the internet. You never if [know] if somethings gonna catch a spark or not.”

“I’m very excited for everything that has happened and receive it humbly. But at the end of the day I’m a black creative and representing my culture and expressing myself authentically is of the utmost importance to me.”

Fans have been wowed by the trailer with many even believing it is for a real movie.

“I AM HERE FOR THIS FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR MOVIE!” one user tweeted.

“I saw a preview of a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Movie and it looked good af,” another user expressed.

“They made Fresh Prince of Bel Air into a movie & it’s a drama. You know what I’m f—— here for it,” a different fan wrote.

Although Cooper’s trailer is not being made into a movie, it wouldn’t be a bad idea considering Ribeiro, 47, has ruled out the possibility of their ever being a reboot featuring some of the original cast.

“I think it’s impossible with James Avery being gone,” Ribeiro said during an episode of PeopleTV’s Chatter in October.

“Do we really want to see Will and Carlton in their 40s and 50s?” Ribeiro continued. “I think people think they want to see that, but I don’t think people really want to see that.”

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ran for six seasons and ended in 1996.
