Mass. Officer Who Was Recently Re-Certified in CPR Saves Choking Baby's Life

Officer JaworskiA Massachusetts officer is being celebrated after saving a choking baby’s life.
According to a press release issued by Winthrop Police Department, officer Robert Jaworski had just completed a CPR refresher training when he was alerted that a 1-month-old infant was choking at a home on Sunset Road on Tuesday.
The 30-year veteran of the Winthrop Police Department used the training he had completed around 10 minutes before to remove a substance from the child’s throat.

According to ABC affiliate WCVB, Daniel Barnes told NewsCenter 5 reporter Mary Saladna that he and his wife were watching granddaughter Savannah, when she began to choke on her formula, adding that Savannah's face went from red to blue.
"My wife was trying to pat her on the back to clear the airway, and thank God the ambulance and the cops showed up," Barnes said.
"He turned the child over, faced the child down toward the floor, tilting; gave the child three back blows," Winthrop police Chief Terence Delehanty said per WCVB. "The third back blow, the child started crying, which is always a wonderful thing."
The infant and a parent were then taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for evaluation.
“Officer Jaworski’s prompt response and application of back thrusts to the unresponsive infant were nothing short of extraordinary, and undoubtedly played a crucial role in ensuring the baby’s well-being,” said Chief Wiley, per the department's press release.
“The professionalism, courage and skill shown by Officer Jaworski in a critical moment was truly commendable,” Chief Delehanty added. “Winthrop is incredibly fortunate to have dedicated and compassionate first responders like Officer Jaworski patrolling our streets and ensuring the safety of our residents.”
