“The Masked Singer” has showcased some memorable duos over the years, beginning with the Snow Owls in season 4, who turned out to be country music legend Clint Black and his wife, actress Lisa Hartman Black. This season a pair of pals are performing as Beets.

They took to the stage for the first time on the March 13 episode and won over the audience and judges Ken JeongJenny McCarthyRita Ora and Robin Thicke with their cover of the Michael Buble hit “Home.”

Beets are two men, each of whom has a distinctive sound but whose voices blend together so effortlessly. It was no surprise when they revealed, “We’re the best of friends and we’re pretty good co-stars too.” That latter phrase led two of the judges down the wrong path with their guesses of Will Arnett & Jason Bateman (Rita) and Steve Martin & Martin Short (Robin). Ken was right that these fellows make their living by raising their voice in song but he was wrong to think that Beets was the R&B duo K-Ci & JoJo.

We’ve been rewatching their first performance and the video clues package and have all your “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the answer to the question, “Who is Beets”?

We are so sure that Beets is Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard, who came to fame on “American Idol” back in 2003. Don’t believe us? Besides the fact that the Beets sounds just like them, just consider how so many of the clues fit in with the lives of Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard.

Studdard was the winner of season 2 of “American Idol” while Aiken was a close second. Beets referenced this milestone when they said, “for a moment we had millions of eyes on us. Yea, 40 million of them.” And we saw a playing card, the two of hearts; that indicates their order of finishing.

Aiken and Studdard account for three of the 13 platinum albums release by this season’s contestants on “The Masked Singer.” Studdard hit this sales mark with his debut album “Soulful” while Aikens did it with both his first and second albums, “Measure of a Man” and “Merry Christmas With Love.”

Beets admitted, “when it felt like the world was trying to pit us against each other, we’ve always had each other’s back.” While Aiken and Studdard each has had success on his own, they have often toured together in the decades since their days on “Idol.”

That basket of apples made us think of the Big Apple, a nickname for New York City. In 2018, the pair played Broadway together, appearing in a well-received Christmas concert.

We will only find out if we are right that Beets is Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard when they are unmasked. That will happen when they lose a vote or win the show. Do you think we are right about the true identity of Beets? Sound off in the comments section with your best guesses.
