'The Masked Singer' recap: Which two celebrities were unmasked? And were the judges right?

Spoiler alert! This story contains details from "The Masked Singer" Season 2, Episodes 5 and 6, including the identity of the two eliminated celebrities.

Thanks to the World Series, we got double the "Masked Singer" this week, which means two crooning celebrities were unmasked Wednesday night, as the clues get ever more misleading and the singing (mostly) gets better.

Fox aired two episodes back to back after the show was preempted the past two weeks for the World Series, so we didn't have to wait for the end of the night to meet both celebrities. Also, the first episode was the conclusion of the second round of competition, and the second hour the beginning of Round 3.

So who was revealed? Let's dig in.

First to sing was Rottweiler, who crooned a lovely rendition of "Love Runs Out" by One Republic. His new clues included the words "I want it that way," trophies, a drawing of an angel, a reference to musical theater, the name "Caroline" and the word "kale." The judges were into boy band or folk music singers like Brian Littrell from Backstreet Boys, Kevin Jonas (as if he'd do this in the middle of the bands' resurgence) and Pat Monahan, lead singer of Train. However when Rottweiler says his childhood heroes were Bruce Lee and Boyz II Men, it is clear that he is an older millennial or very young Gen Xer. (There was a particular moment for Boyz II Men, we all know it.) None of the judges' guesses seem right.

Before Ladybug sings, last year's contestant Joey Fatone randomly shows up to remind us that last year judge Jenny McCarthy called him fat. Lovely. But OK, back to Ladybug, who discusses how her life "looked rosy" on the outside but had many hidden problems. Her clues flash a "best host" trophy and she says "pieces of me," which truly throws the judges. She sings "Juice" by Lizzo, a huge endeavor of a song and somehow doesn't blow it. (I really thought she would.) Ken Jeong continues to guess Lindsay Lohan to Ladybug's immense displeasure (the judges can be so annoying on this show), but the famous family and "best host" clues give me Kelly Osbourne vibes.

Everyone's favorite adorable/favorite plant is up next, Tree. Her clue package includes the line "I'm not a regular tree, I'm a cool tree," which to me, completely confirms that it's Ana Gasteyer under there. That's a riff on a "I'm not a regular mom, I'm a cool mom" from "Mean Girls," and although Gasteyer doesn't say it, she plays one of two moms in the movie. Her clue package mentions more about the holidays, and she was in Fox's "A Christmas Story Live!" in 2017. She sings "Think" by Aretha Franklin and the best guess from the panel is Nicole with Amy Sedaris. (It is not, Padma Lakshmi, Jenny McCarthy. It is not.)

Next to sing is Penguin, who throws the panelists into a tizzy with the words "D List" and "curbed my enthusiasm" in her clue package. She sings "All About that Bass" by Meghan Trainor and the judges throw out a wide variety of stars including Nicole Byer, Sherri Shepherd, Star Jones, Wanda Sykes and Mindy Kaling. (I'm gonna say no, Kaling does not need this show.) The "D List" remark has them wondering about Kathy Griffin after Penguin exits.

Flower takes the stage after Penguin, and drops the big hint that she has never taken a voice lesson. (That doesn't necessarily mean she's not a recording artist, though.) Her clue package includes a lot of numbers, a clock that flashes 12:00, the number 524 and a price tag with $13 written on it. She sings "Cheap Thrills" by Sia in a high-pitched voice that has the judges guessing older singers like Shirley Bassey and Anita Baker (but Jeong mentions Bjork again because he lives to be an obstructionist on this show). Flower reveals her favorite band is Kings of Leon, maybe meaning she's younger, or is just an incredibly hip grandma.

The last performance of this episode is from Fox, who talks about his "bark" making him ashamed and drops the words "fast and furious" and "shazam." He sings "Hey Look Ma, I Made It" by Panic! At the Disco and squeezes a genuine dance break into his performance. Jeong guesses Jamie Foxx because of the word "shazam" (he does host a Fox game show called "Beat Shazam," so it's not as far-fetched a guess as it seems initially) and Nicole Scherzinger thinks it might be Neo. His clue? "It's ironic that I've spent most of my life in costume because growing up I imagined I'd be in a uniform." OK, sure, that helps.

At the end of the hour, it's Penguin who gets eliminated by the judge and in-studio audience voting. For their final guesses, McCarthy goes with Nicole Byer, Jeong goes with Wanda Sykes, Scherzinger goes with Star Jones and Thicke goes with Mindy Kaling. But the Penguin is revealed to be Sherri Shepherd, much to the delight of McCarthy, her co-host on "The View."

Shepherd told the judges she did the show at the urging of her son, Jeffrey, who told her she should do it even though she was scared. She also got some laughs when she told host Nick Cannon: "It was so hard not to grab your butt, Nick."

But we barely have time to recover from that big reveal when a new episode is queued up, this one the start of the third round and guest-judged by Anthony Anderson, who has even worse guesses than Jeong does.

First to sing is Black Widow, who mentions Memphis and Bel Air in her third round of clues, a fact that judges fixate on. She sings "Believe" by Cher while wearing a sling. (She injured herself recently and the dancers all don slings in solidarity.) Thicke guesses Raven-Symoné and I'm inclined to agree based on three episodes of clues. The contestants bring physical clues onstage this round, and she goes for crackers and whipped cream. (I've got nothing there.) Anderson, clearly not understanding what kind of stars appear on this show, guesses Drew Barrymore.

Second up is Thingamajig, who has stolen Scherzinger's heart, apparently. (She calls him her "husband.") His clue package includes gummy worms, bowties and dress shoes being dipped in gravy (sure, why not). He sings "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" by The Temptations, much to the delight of Scherzinger. Jeong calls the tall, furry man his favorite performer, but every contestant is Jeong's favorite, it seems. Guesses included noted tall people Montell Joran, Dennis Rodman and Tonnie DeVoe of Bell Biv DeVoe. His clue is an ASL dictionary.

Butterfly takes center stage next, and references that whole electrocution thing that happened when she was rehearsing for Round 2 (casual). Her clues include the words "Joyful Noise" and images of a church choir behind her. Most confusing is a certificate that says "car salesman of the year," but maybe "Masked" is getting really flexible about what "celebrity" means. She sings a quiet version of "Don't Know Why" by Norah Jones, which leads Scherzinger and McCarthy to guess Destiny's Child singer Michelle Williams, although Thicke is still stuck on all the London references in previous clues, and thinks it's Leona Lewis. Williams makes the most sense (she's incredibly religious and has released Christian music), and it does sound a bit like her. Her physical clue is a forensics kit which, again, helps not at all, but maybe she really likes "CSI"?

The third singer of the night is Leopard, who sings "Teenage Dream" by Katy Perry with the flair we've come to expect from the contestant. His clues include the word "pose" (which lead the judges to Billy Porter, but Porter is already too big for this show). His physical clue is a bunch of old-timey cameras and he talks about how he likes to be behind the lens more than in front of it, and the judges wonder about actor/director Tyler Perry. Don't know if it's Perry, but I'm sure it's not Porter.

The final giant animal of the very long "Masked" night is Flamingo, who drops the Spanish word "mira" in her clue package and indicates she is both a singer and an actress, not one or the other. She performs "Never Enough" by Loren Allred and crushes it. Thick guesses "American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino, and Anderson agrees, McCarthy thinks its former "Cheetah Girl" and "The Real" host Adrienne Bailon. (McCarthy might actually be right for once.) Her physical clue is an NAACP Image Award, an awards show that Anderson has hosted on more than one occasion. The reveal of the small trophy had Anderson at his most alert all evening.

In the end, Black Widow is the one eliminated and the five judges offer one last guess. Scherzinger guesses Raven-Symoné and Robin agrees. Anderson thinks it's not Raven because he knows her from "Black-ish" and says he texted her during the performance (a new strategy on the show), so he sticks with Drew Barrymore. McCarthy goes for "Glee" alum Amber Riley and Jeong with Miranda Lambert.

Black Widow actually was Raven-Symoné. When Cannon asked why she decided to do "Masked Singer," she said: "I said, 'Oh my goodness it'd be awesome. … They can't see me. I can be the person I am in the mirror and not have to put on this (smiles) all the time.' " She also offered a piece of advice related to her injury: "You know, just don't ride a Hoverboard at 33."

Despite the fact Anderson was so sure it wasn't her, he congratulated her on her performance, saying, "I texted to see if it was you. You could have hit me back and be like, 'Yeah, and vote for me." Raven's final

Just a few celebrities left to unmask halfway through the season, and I can only think the clues will just get more and more misleading from here.
