‘The Masked Singer': Cupcake on Performing Solo and the Irony of Her Costume

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Season 6 premiere of “The Masked Singer.”)

Another contestant made their exit on “The Masked Singer” Wednesday night, but even being eliminated, she was…well, so excited. Cupcake was revealed to be Ruth Pointer, of the Pointer Sisters, the group behind the classic “I’m So Excited.”

Originally, Pointer wasn’t supposed to hit the stage alone though. Like Banana Split, it was supposed to be a two person costume — or rather, two cupcakes. Unfortunately, health issues forced Pointer’s sister Anita to pull out of the competition, but Ruth notes her sibling was “really glad that I [still competed].”

Though Pointer admits that hitting the stage alone was a daunting prospect, she knew she was capable of doing it.

“I had an experience a few years ago, doing a USO tour alone, that I was terrified to do because I had never performed alone before,” Pointer told TheWrap in an interview ahead of her unmasking. “And my husband inspired me and encouraged me, and my band said, ‘we got you, we’ll go with you and do this tour with you.’ And I was like, okay, and I had never performed alone before and I did this USO tour by myself. Once I got into it… once I got into the rhythm of it, it gave me a new confidence going forward in my singing career as a whole.

“So that’s kind of where I drew from. When I knew I had to do this alone. I said, ‘Okay, girl, you know you can do this.’ You’ve done solo things before, and I just pulled up from that time and that courage that I had to. I don’t know where it came from. But thank God it showed up,” she added with a laugh.

Only Nicole Scherzinger correctly guessed Cupcake’s true identity, which didn’t surprise Pointer at all.

“I always felt like she might be the one to get it,” Pointer said.

But even Pointer can admit that some of the clues surrounding her character were surprisingly difficult.

“Some of them were a little weird to me. The needle one was kind of a clue that sort of — you know, for the point of the needle,” she said. “But there was one: the whiskey. Which was one that I think threw people off, which was a good one. Because I was not with the group when my sisters sang at the whiskey. When I heard that one, I had to really think about it.”

The funniest part for Pointer though, was the irony behind her costume. Because, as it turns out, Ruth Pointer doesn’t actually eat cupcakes.

“What’s funnier than that is I don’t eat cupcakes,” Pointer revealed with a laugh. “I have a very strategic food plan and I don’t eat sugar at all, or bread. Any kind of bread or cake or anything like that. So, it’s hilarious because I have some friends that are in the same food program that I’m in and they were laughing. They said ‘Of all things for you to be, someone who doesn’t eat that, that’s who you are.”

“The Masked Singer” airs on Thursdays, at 8/7c on Fox.
