Maryland loses another QB, freshman Kasim Hill, to season-ending injury
Maryland continues to have terrible luck with quarterback injuries.
The Terps lost starter Tyrrell Pigrome to a season-ending ACL injury during their Week 1 win over Texas. A few weeks later, Maryland announced it has also lost quarterback Kasim Hill for the rest of the season. Hill, a true freshman who came in after Pigrome was injured, also suffered a torn ACL, doing so early in Saturday’s home game against UCF.
Hill, a top 100, four-star recruit in 2017, was 3-for-3 passing and also had a rushing touchdown to help the Terps knock off the Longhorns in Austin. He then made his first career start the following week against Towson and completed 13-of-16 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns.
With Hill injured, Max Bortenschlager played the rest of the game at QB in an eventual 38-10 loss. Bortenschlager, a sophomore, completed 15-of-26 passes for 132 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He appeared in two games in 2016 and was 16-of-33 for 209 yards and a touchdown.
With Pigrome and Hill injured, Bortenschlager and North Carolina transfer Caleb Henderson are the only two healthy scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. Henderson was expected to be in the mix to start, but has been working his way back after suffering a foot injury during spring practice.
Quarterback injuries have been a frequent issue for Maryland.
With a new starter on Saturday at Minnesota, this will mark the third year in a row and fourth time in six years that Maryland will start at least three quarterbacks during the season.
Yikes.
