'Mary Poppins Returns' could be Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ticket to the 2019 Oscars

Lin-Manuel Miranda has quickly became a household name. Could it be because of his award-winning Broadway musicals, his Pulitzer Prize, or his 11 Tony Awards? How about all of the above! And there’s more: Miranda has also added Grammy and Emmy awards to his collection. He’s an Oscar away from becoming an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) winner — and his role in Mary Poppins Returns might be what gets him there.

In the sequel to the Disney classic, Miranda joins Emily Blunt, who plays Mary Poppins. His role as London lamplighter Jack has received major praise and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy. His son is a big fan, and the Puerto Rican actor has the tweet to prove it.

Miranda began his career on the stage. When he was 19 years old, he wrote the first draft of his musical In the Heights. The 2005 production is now being made into a movie. “The film audience is as diverse as our world, and I think we’re finally ready to make this movie,” Miranda told Yahoo Entertainment. “We’re in the middle of casting In the Heights right now. I’m so excited.”

Ten years later, he skyrocketed to superstardom with the groundbreaking hip-hop musical Hamilton. The production has won 31 awards, including a Tony for Best Musical. “I started writing musicals because I really wanted to be in musicals,” Miranda said during a joint Variety interview with Lady Gaga. “I didn’t see that many opportunities for myself. If you’re a Puerto Rican dude, you get Paul from A Chorus Line.” Hamilton broke records, becoming the first Broadway show to gross more than $3 million for an eight-performance week. In 2016, he won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Only eight other musicals have won the prestigious award. “The fun for me was realizing, all right, ‘what’s the adrenaline source?’ Because I get so much adrenaline from the audience when I’m performing in Hamilton,” he told Lady Gaga.

In November, he received the 2,652nd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “I feel like I’m dreaming,” Miranda told the cheering crowd during his star ceremony. “I cannot tell you what a dream come true that is for me.”

Miranda is getting ready for his limited January return to the Hamilton stage in Puerto Rico. He’s also appearing on the small screen in the first season of the fantasy drama His Dark Materials (airing on HBO in 2019).
