Mary J. Blige is set to be honored with the Icon Award during the 2022 Billboard Music Awards, celebrating those who have achieved excellence on the Billboard Charts and have made an unforgettable mark on music as a whole.

“My career has been such an incredible and unexpected journey that has included many turns into avenues I never could have imagined like acting, producing, launching businesses, and now even my own music festival,” expressed Blige in a press statement. “Through it all, I always one way or another gravitated back to my first love, music. To be recognized in this way at this moment, with the Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards, is an incredible honor and one that I am truly humbled by.”

Since the honor was established in 2011, only 10 artists have received the award: Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion, Cher, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Garth Brooks, and P!NK.

In the competitive categories, Doja Cat and The Weeknd lead among nominees with 14 and 17 nominations respectively. The most-decorated BBMA artist of all time, Drake, who holds the record with 29 wins, is up for 11 categories at this year’s event.

For more than 30 years, the BBMAs have celebrated music achievements. The finalists are determined by performance on the Billboard Charts. This year’s awards are based on the chart period of April 10, 2021, through March 26, 2022.

The BBMAs will broadcast live coast-to-coast from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 15 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC. Additionally, the ceremony will stream live on Peacock. The awards are produced by MRC Live & Alternative with Robert Deaton as Executive Producer.
