For Mary Fitzgerald, Selling Sunset’s newest season was also likely its most devastating.

During the Netflix reality show’s seventh season, Fitzgerald, 43, was overjoyed when she learned she was pregnant following a trip to Bali with Romain Bonnet in December 2022. Nine weeks later, however, she suffered a miscarriage, which she and Bonnet realized during a scheduled ultrasound appointment when the doctor couldn’t find a heartbeat.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Fitzgerald describes the miscarriage as an “emotional” and "physical" loss that completely caught her by surprise.

“When we were in Bali, we were very relaxed and had a great time,” Fitzgerald recalls, adding, “We were just in a very zen state of mind, and it was just incredible. We were so excited and I really didn't think about the possibility — I should have — but I didn't really think about the possibility of the pregnancy not going through.”

Fitzgerald had taken many precautions to take care of herself physically and mentally during the early weeks of her pregnancy.

“I'm not really in it [the season] quite as much and around the other girls, and I just removed myself from stressful situations,” she explained. “Instead of being in the middle, mediating everybody else's problems, I took a step back from being a manager. I just reduced the stress in my life and made sure I was lightly working out. Didn't want to overdo it, but getting an exercise, eating very healthy, did a lot of yoga and meditation. It was just trying to take care of myself as best as possible.”

The realtor credits Bonnet for helping her get through the challenging period afterward, which included a septic miscarriage, a uterine infection that occurs one to two days after the miscarriage itself. The situation required the reality star to have a procedure called a dilation and curettage (D&C) in which tissue from inside the uterus is removed.

“I can’t ask for a better partner,” she says. “He's just very, very thoughtful and sensitive to the whole situation, and he just tried to take care of me the best [way] possible, and I'm like, honey, you're going through this too.”

The couple first entered into a civil union together in March 2018 but previously told PEOPLE they didn't consider themselves married until their official wedding in Los Angeles in October 2019. Fitzgerald has been married twice before, and has a son named Austin from a previous relationship.

Despite this season’s serious setback, Fitzgerald still dreams of having a family with Bonnet, although she says the two will “start with one [child] and see what happens.”

“It's always nice to have siblings and so I do appreciate that, but let's see how much we can handle with our busy work schedules,” she explains. “I think one is a lot!”
