The recently released The Marvels trailer raises some questions about the film’s place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. Does the upcoming movie take place before or after Secret Invasion? And where is it set in the MCU timeline? Here’s what you need to know.

In an interview with Empire Magazine (via Movieweb), Samuel L. Jackson himself revealed The Marvels and Secret Invasion are connected. More than that, what happens in Secret Invasion will trigger the events in The Marvels. Roughly, Secret Invasion is set in mid-2025 and is very connected to the present-day MCU.
“This series has to happen so that The Marvels can happen. All these things are connected in an interesting sort of way,” Jackson said.
It’s safe to suppose the upcoming film will somehow reference Secret Invasion. The trailer also showed Nick Fury will play a pivotal part in Carol Denvers’ latest adventure.
Where is The Marvels set in the MCU Timeline?
The Marvels is set after Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel.
While The Marvels exact collocation in the ever-expanding MCU timeline is still uncertain, it’s sure it will go down after Carol Denvers’ origin story. It was easy to guess that since the events of Captain Marvel occur in MCU’s 1995, making it the second movie to watch in chronological order after Captain America: The First Avenger. The Ms. Marvel series introduced Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), who will serve as one of the protagonists of The Marvels together with Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris).
