Marvel's “Hawkeye” Spinoff “Echo ”Explores the Depths of 'Pain' and 'Rage' in Bloody First Trailer
All five episodes of 'Echo', which is Marvel's first TV-MA-rated series, will be available to watch on Jan. 10 on Disney+ and Hulu
Marvel's latest offering is set to be a violently bloody good time.
The first trailer for Echo was released on Friday, giving people a new look at the origins of the character who was first introduced in the Disney+ series Hawkeye.
The trailer starts off showing Alaqua Cox’s Echo (a.k.a. Maya Lopez) as a young girl being taunted by an ice cream vendor for speaking in sign language. The interaction is seen by Daredevil villain and crime lord Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio), who then goes to beat up the vendor.
“I see everything that you are. I always have,” Fisk tells Maya. “Don’t be afraid.”
The screen then cuts to a shot of Maya all grown up, doing some of her own fighting and a glimpse of her visiting a grave. There is also a moment where Fisk’s crew hunts her down, which is intertwined with shots of indigenous villagers dancing and living their lives as the words flash on the screen, “No bad deed goes unpunished.”
“You have so much pain in you, so much rage that you can’t contain it,” Fisk continues as the trailer continues to show intertwined shots of him and Maya fighting separate enemies. “You and I are the same.”

The series will follow Maya, an indigenous woman who is deaf and speaks in American Sign Language (ASL), as she is pursued by Fisk’s criminal empire. Her story told over five episodes will also show her return home and “confront her own family and legacy,” according to a synopsis.
The show is rated TV-MA, making it Marvel's first mature-rated show.

“It’s a little on the grittier side for Marvel, and shows the breadth of what Marvel is capable of,” Brad Winderbaum, the studio’s head of streaming, television and animation, told The Hollywood Reporter. “It is sort of a new direction for the brand, especially for Disney+.”
Director Syndey Freeland added, per THR, “People on our show — they bleed. They die. They get killed and there are real world consequences.”

Freeland and Catriona McKenzie direct episodes in the series, which is executive produced by Freeland, Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Stephen Broussard, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Richie Palmer, Jason Gavin and Marion Dayre. The series is also co-executive produced by Jennifer L. Booth and Amy Rardin.
