Marvel's Avengers videogame bumped four months for 'fine tuning and polishing'

Gamers will have to wait a bit longer for the big console release of Marvel’s Avengers, but maybe it’s all for the best.

The developers at Crystal Dynamics announced Tuesday morning that the videogame, originally set for a March 2020 release, will now be dropping later this year on Sept. 4. The reason is “fine tuning and polishing,” which, for the game that sparked a lot of strong words from fans on social media with the release of that first trailer, could be a good thing.

“At Crystal Dynamics our ambition has always been to deliver the ultimate Avengers gaming experience. In order to achieve that goal, we have made the difficult decision to move the release date of Marvel’s Avengers to Sept. 4, 2020,” a statement from Scot Amos and Ron Rosenberg of Crystal Dynamics reads. “As fans ourselves, it’s an honor and a privilege to work with these legendary characters and we know what these Super Heroes mean to us and True Believers around the world. When we set out to bring you our vision for Marvel’s Avengers, we committed to delivering an original story-driven campaign, engaging co-op, and compelling content for years to come. To that end, we will spend this additional development time focusing on fine tuning and polishing the game to the high standards our fans expect and deserve.”

The first trailer for the game arrived in June, setting the stage for a story about superheroes being outlawed after a catastrophic fiasco on “A-Day,” which marked the opening of a West Coast Avengers headquarters. Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, and Black Widow were unveiled as playable characters, though many bashed the look of these virtual heroes when compared to what fans are used to in the MCU movies.

At New York Comic Con in October, additional details revealed a more expansive story. Marvel’s Avengers is centered around Kamala Khan, the fan-favorite Inhumans character. The disaster on A-Day causes a Terrigen Mist reaction that awakens her super-stretchy abilities. When the Avengers are made illegal after the death of Captain America, she fights to bring the remaining team members back together as a new threat, the organization A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics), takes over with A.I.

“The worldwide teams working on Marvel’s Avengers sincerely appreciate the support you’ve shown us,” the statement continues. “We thrive on your enthusiasm and feedback and we can’t wait to show you more. We apologize for the delay. We’re confident it will be worth the wait.”

In other news, another big gaming release of 2020 was also delayed. Yoshinori Kitase, a producer on the new Final Fantasy VII, announced the remake will now be released on April 20 “in order to give ourselves a few extra weeks to apply final polish to the game and to deliver you with the best possible experience.”
