'Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors' trailer features Marvel's most diverse onscreen team ever

If you’ve wondered what the next generation of Marvel heroes will look like, here’s your answer. Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors, an 80-minute animated film premiering this month on the Disney Channel, aims to capture a ‘tween audience with an ensemble of diverse, dynamic young superheroes. Watch Yahoo Entertainment’s exclusive trailer above.

The characters in Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors will be new to a lot of viewers, but they’re already familiar to Marvel Comics fans. The trailer opens with a conversation between Ms. Marvel, a Pakistani-American teen with body-morphing powers, and Squirrel Girl, a computer genius with a squirrel sidekick and the proportional abilities of a squirrel. Under the tutelage of original Ms. Marvel Carol Danvers, who now goes by Captain Marvel (and will be played by Brie Larson in the upcoming feature film Captain Marvel), the girls form an “unofficial team” with other teenage supers. These include Quake, a girl who can produce earth-shaking vibrations (and has played a major role in the Marvel TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.); America Chavez, an ultra-powerful female hero with near-invulnerability and flying powers; Patriot, an African-American teen whose powers mirror those of Captain America; and Inferno, a Latino mutant who can generate fire from thin air.

The film is the latest installment of Disney’s Marvel Rising franchise, which so far has included comics and a series of animated prequel shorts (viewable on the Marvel HQ YouTube channel) that also featured Ghost-Spider, the arachnid-charged heroine formerly known as Gwen Stacy.

Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors premieres on Disney Channel and Disney XD on Sept. 30 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Along with the animated franchise, Marvel and Disney will launch a complementary series of merchandise, from Hasbro dolls and web-shooters to branded apparel and walkie-talkies, that will be available exclusively at Target in October. Here’s a sampling:
